HYDE C & SC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, 5 DECEMBER 2016

Present:  K Duffy – chair
                E Bowden – secretary
                H Kerr – treasurer
and 29 members.

Apologies for absence: J Mottram, P Chorlton, Eileen Bowden, E Griffin, Ian White, S White and J Lofthouse.

Chairman’s Report:
K Duffy read out his report, and enlarged on some of his points as he progressed. He commented on the fact that it had been another difficult year financially, but an extremely good one in other ways, notably the highly successful PCA event (despite appalling weather), the Squash team’s elevation to the Premier Division and the First XI’s capture of the Cheshire Cup for the third time in eight years.

Treasurer’s Report:
H Kerr reported a loss of £4,761 over the tear, despite the PCA event and associated activities having realised over £10,000, including bar receipts. 2015/16 was therefore the second successive year of losses, which pointed to a worrying situation. He commented on some of the details of income, expenditure and the balance. Private hires were similar to the previous year – 55 as against 59, but that a fair number by their nature did not garner much income. He went on to mention that former Life Member and Trustee Albert Hill has left the Club a considerable legacy which, used wisely, should ease our financial problems for some considerable time.
Comments and Questions from the Floor:

1. B Wilson stressed the fundamental necessity of ensuring that income must exceed expenditure, and that the trustees should monitor the spending of Albert’s legacy.
2. M Coyne urged that we investigate imaginative ways of encouraging greater social use of the Club. This is a point aired at every AGM but it is appreciated that our relative remoteness militates more widespread usage.
3. R Williamson reported that Roger Isherwood has devised a plan which includes a four person unit to oversee the everyday running of the Club, dealing with problems decisively as and when they arise. It was agreed that Management will investigate this idea at the first meeting of the new committee.
4. John Smith disagrees with our dual pricing system for drinks, pointing out that the main beneficiaries are those who value the Club most, and therefore would presumably not mind paying full price. He also offered to help Howard with the increasingly complex business of overseeing our finances, which was gratefully received.
5. R Brierley believed management was ineffective. He felt that, given our location, bar takings will never greatly increase. However we need to spend in order to make money, and this involves “selling” the Club. Promoting ourselves has never been a strength. And don’t forget the Christmas Market on Saturday 10th December.
